Position Summary

The UNCG School of Music, part of the UNCG College of Visual and Performing Arts, seeks a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Jazz (Brass). The candidate must demonstrate artistic excellence and possess a master’s degree. College or university level teaching experience is preferred, along with an ability to recruit top quality students.

Responsibilities:
o Maintain vigorous creative activity
o Perform with faculty jazz group
o Lead a jazz studio on applied instrument
o Direct large jazz ensemble and/or coach & coordinate small jazz groups
o Teach classes such as Introduction to Jazz Listening, Principles of Jazz Theory, Jazz Pedagogy for non-jazz majors, Improvisation, or courses which best suit the candidate’s expertise
o Participate in service, recruiting, performance juries, and auditions

Housed in the large and supportive structure of the UNCG College of Visual and Performing Arts, the Miles Davis Jazz Studies Program is comprised of 30 undergraduate jazz majors who are instructed by three full-time and three part-time faculty. Low faculty-student ratio empowers and encourages active mentorship on and off the bandstand in the tradition of the great bandleaders and mentors of jazz history.

The UNCG College of Visual and Performing Arts, a member of NASM since 1938, is the only institution in North Carolina offering comprehensive degrees in music and music education from the baccalaureate through the doctorate. Over 70 faculty members teach a music student body of c. 600 majors. For years, the School’s alumni have distinguished themselves in important professional positions throughout the world while its justly renowned student ensembles continue to perform frequently in prestigious state, regional, and international settings. Since 1999, the School of Music has occupied a new state-of-the-art building that affords students and faculty an outstanding environment for all aspects of music study and performance. Greensboro is equidistant between Atlanta and Washington, DC, between the mountains and the sea. Greensboro is extremely arts-oriented and, along with its sister cities in the “Triad” (Winston-Salem and High Point), provides a vital cultural stimulus to the entire Piedmont region and state of North Carolina. The surrounding region also includes the large metropolitan areas of Raleigh-Durham and Charlotte, further enabling an active performing scene.
