The University of North Carolina at Greensboro School of Music is currently seeking qualified candidates to consider for the Specialty Trades Technician – Piano Technician. The primary tasks include, but are not limited to:

  • Tune pianos using tuning forks, hammers and/or electronic tuning devices
  • Replace broken or missing strings
  • Locate and correct defects in keyboard, pedals and action assembly, using special tools and gauges
  • Replace faulty, worn or broken parts such as hammers, shanks and joint connections
  • Confer with faculty members and students regarding tuning and special needs for the piano during concerts
  • Perform emergency repairs and tuning during concerts and recitals
  • Maintain records on piano repairs and tuning;
  • Rebuild pianos, including replacing sets of hammers and restringing
  • Maintain inventory and requisition piano parts and supplies such as strings, pins and sets of hammers.

Minimum Qualifications

High school diploma or equivalency and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Certification as a Registered Piano Technician (Piano Technicians Guild) or the equivalent
OR four years of experience in piano tuning, repair and/or maintenance
OR any equivalent combination of experience, training and/or education

Knowledge and skill in tuning, voicing, repairing and action regulation of various types of pianos.
Skill in use of piano technician tools such as tuning forks, electronic tuning devices and tuning hammers.
Ability to effectively communicate.

Alternate Option
