Position Summary

Facilities Design and Construction (FDC) manages improvement projects through the design and construction phases for the University. Our mission is to minimize financial risk and achieve the best possible results within the budget and time frame required for the benefit of the entire campus community. The department builds consensus and educates faculty, staff, students, designers and contractors in order to achieve the highest quality product possible. We are helping to build and sustain the community and are committed in the educational mission of The University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The Assistant Director of Design will supervise and oversee on-the-job and outside training, assignments, schedules and reviews of professional staff.

DUTIES INCLUDE BUT ARE NOT LIMITED TO:

  • Supervising design project managers during design phase of all new and renovated Capital projects;
  • Provide Leadership oversight and review in design contract fees and amendments;
  • Assisting in preparation of UNCG’s priority list to UNC General Administration for 6 year and Biennium Capital plan submissions.

ESSENTIAL TASKS INCLUDE:

  • Matching project managers with knowledge and expertise of the project;
  • Providing guidance to the project managers on all problematic issues during the design phase of the project;
  • Insuring communication flow between design project managers, designers, user groups and code officials;
  • Insuring State regulations are adhered to;
  • Verifying and coordinating project authorization, generating OC-25s, monitoring the Preconstruction Estimate (PCE) form;
  • Verifying Purchase Authorization;
  • Tracking project costs (signage,IT,testing,etc.) and tracking designer’s cost estimates;
  • Providing oversight of reconciliation and approval signatures on the PCE form;
  • Providing technical support to other departments on campus;
  • Performing other duties as defined by supervisor.
  • Seeking an individual with more of an Architectural background is preferred.

Minimum Qualifications

ENGINEER SUPERVISOR:

BACHELOR’S DEGREE IN THE ENGINEERING DISCIPLINE RELATED TO THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT AND TWO YEARS OF RELATED ENGINEERING EXPERIENCE; OR EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. ALL DEGREES MUST BE RECEIVED FROM APPROPRIATELY ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS.

ARCHITECT SUPERVISOR:
BACHELOR’S DEGREE RELATED TO THE AREA OF ASSIGNMENT AND TWO YEARS OF RELATED EXPERIENCE; OR EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE. LICENSED TO PRACTICE ARCHITECTURE OR LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE BY THE NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF ARCHITECTURE OR THE NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTS. ALL DEGREES MUST BE RECEIVED FROM APPROPRIATELY ACCREDITED INSTITUTIONS.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Five (5) years or more experience in supervision of professional staff.
  • Five (5) years or more experience as a licensed architect at an institution of higher education.
  • Project Management experience with the NC State Construction Office.
  • Excellent written and oral communication.
Alternate Option

If no applicants apply who meet the required competency level and training & experience requirements, then management may consider other applicants. Salary would be determined based on competencies, equity, budget, and market considerations.

Candidates with a current NCARB certification and the ability to obtain a license to practice architecture by the North Carolina Board of Architecture may be considered. License will need to be obtained before employment can start.
