Position Summary

The Special Collections and University Archives department supports the teaching, research and public service mission of University Libraries and the University. The department seeks to acquire, preserve, and arrange rare and unique items. These items are intended to support faculty instruction, student learning, and the work of researchers.

The primary purposes of this position include:

  1. To support the arrangement and description of manuscript collections and University records. And, the crafting of finding aids to ensure the collections accessibility and online visibility. 65%
  2. To support the arrangement and description and preservation of born-digital items. 15%
  3. To support the department’s reference services. 10%
  4. To support the department’s assessment efforts by managing the department’s statistics. 10% UNCG faculty and staff, students, outside researchers.

Minimum Qualifications


Preferred Qualifications
  • Demonstrated knowledge of current issues and trends in archival practices in the areas of descriptive standards, collection management, and preservation standards and practices.
  • Experience processing archival collections and writing finding aids.
  • Experience working with an archival collections management system, such as Archon, Archivists’ Toolkit, ArchivesSpace.
  • Working knowledge of the application of metadata content and metadata structure standards relevant to the archival control of digital collection materials (EAD, Dublin Core, MODS, PREMIS).
  • Demonstrated ability to work individually and collaboratively in a team setting. Strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to speak to a wide range of audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage projects.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic environment where steady innovation is supported.

Comprehensive knowledge in a specialized area of library and information science. Understands and applies new processes and technologies to a specialized area. Comprehensive knowledge of current systems, technologies, and procedures used in the provision of information services; concepts of fair use, copyright law, state and federal public records laws, and intellectual property rights.
Comprehensive knowledge of and ability to interpret multiple, complex sets of standards, policies and procedures; applies knowledge to extrapolate from existing guidelines to specific situations. Comprehensive knowledge of specialized vocabularies, technical terminologies, bibliographies, complex databases, indices, and other navigational tools in a variety of formats and languages.

Client / Patron Services
Conducts non-routine searches. Selects among a large and complex variety of resources. Analyzes and interprets complex information contained in online systems. Collects information to assist in developing customized programs of information services and support for groups of patrons.
Contributes to records and document policy decisions.

Data/Information/Records Administration
Appraises, arranges, describes and references records and documents transferred to archival custody, including the production of finding aids to promote access to the collection. Creates and edits complex data/records in information systems and databases; evaluates and recommend corrections/enhancements.

Provides instruction or consultation to groups.

Communication (Presentations, Oral, and written)
Explains and interprets programs, policies, and procedures to meet the specific needs of clients/patrons. Communicate information related to overall library operations.

Planning and Organizing Work / Supervison
Evaluates, identifies, and develops new work objectives and methods. Plans and coordinates on-the-job training.
